How to run Java applets in a web-browser (Ubuntu)

Open a Terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

To install Java fonts (optional):
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-fonts

PS: Please do check the comments below for instructions for Ubuntu version 10.04 and above.

    If you’re running ubuntu 10.04 you must use this command first:

    sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ lucid partner'

    This will enable ubuntu partner repository which contains the required package!

    Update: For Ubuntu 10.04+, enter these commands to get it installed:

    sudo bash
    apt-add-repository 'deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ '`lsb_release -cs`' partner'
    apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin
