To enable split view functionality for gedit, you’ll need to install a plugin available for download here. ~/.gnome2/gedit/plugins Open Preferences from the Edit menu. Then, select the plugins tab and enable the entry entitled “Split View 2″. script obtained from http://www.psyguygames.com/SplitView2.01.tar.gz via http://live.gnome.org/Gedit/Plugins Important Notes:

We are Muslims and proud of it…
Islam is not terrorism. Islam does not encourage racism. and Islam does NOT encourage the murder of innocent people (be it Muslims or non-Muslims)!
yes, Islam is different. but that doesn't make it wrong. we are Muslims and we are proud of it,
Do not believe everything that you come across, even if it seems to be from a reliable source.

Every time i download it and try to extract it i get this error
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
can you please paste the content on http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and provide me the link?
It has the wrong file extension. Rename it without any extensions and file-roller (a.k.a. “extract here”) should be able to determine it from the file’s content-type. I think it’s a normal tar (without compression).
Hey…I can’t get this to install in Windows.. I am using gedit under windows…does it need a special version or something? Thank you.
Sorry, but this post targets gedit for linux specifically. The windows version stores its python plugins in ‘c:\Program Files\gedit\lib\gedit-2\plugins (not sure though).
Yes, use tar -xf and it unzip’s fine…
Works as advertized, i.e. splits the screen.
Many thanks.
awesome plugin!
LIked your statement on Islam, I agree with it but sometimes wonder where all the reasonable muslims were when they radical Imams were preaching their hate outside and inside mosques in the UK. Were they afriad?
put it in the given directory and nothing new showed up in the gedit’s plugin list. i’m using ubuntu and really missing this feature.
Which version are you using? Version 2.30.3 here and it’s working just fine.
It appears near the bottom of the list under the name “Split View 2″.
What version of python do you have installed?
I have the same version of gedit and python 2.6.6. It works fine, I made a mistake putting folder into the direction instead of sources. Thanks for quick reply and concern though.
any time
Hey, thanks a lot for the plugin, it works pretty well!!!
One thing that took me a while to figure out was that I had to place the two files (SplitView.py and SpltView.gedit-plugin) directly inside the ~/.gnome2/gedit/plugin, and not the SplitView folder with the fies in it.
I think this could be explicitly stated in the instructions, to avoid others making the same mistake.
Good job again!!!
Updated the post to address this issue. Thanks for the feedback
It’s crashing for me with version 2.30.4. To reproduce:
Open gedit and open a document.
View->Toggle Split View
// Now you’ve got two views open on the original document
Click in right pane, then hit “View other file”
Select another file from the dialog
// Not you’ve got a different document open in each view
Click in the left pane
Gedit crashes and dumps error to the console: “sys:1: GtkWarning: IA__gtk_widget_get_accessible: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)’ failed”
Hello mike. I didn’t write the plugin myself (which is why I’m not hosting the plugin on this site). Try contacting the guys running http://www.psyguygames.com , they might be able to get you in touch with the developer.
On a different note, it seems that the plugin is no longer compatible with newer versions of gedit (3.2). I also tried searching for the plugin on the plugins page and it no longer is featured there. It’s also not featured on (http://www.psyguygames.com/index.php?page=plugins). Can someone else confirm this so that I can update this post?
